Kinnick Stadium Renovation, University of Iowa
Iowa City, IA
The University of Iowa’s Kinnick Stadium was showing its age and in desperate need of a facelift. As a result, new brickwork and details designed to match and honor the existing structure breathe new life into this campus—and city—landmark. Stone is used extensively in accents and graphic panels, while the exterior of the stadium’s new press box incorporates brick at the base with metal panels and glazing above. Renovation work on the east concourse included the addition of modern facilities and the removal of exposed conduit and piping that had been detracting from the stadium’s original grand architecture. The existing south end zone was demolished and rebuilt with a new scoreboard and south plaza entrance to give the stadium a new, dynamic front door approach. To the west, the concourse was upgraded and the press box was replaced with a dramatically expanded one that includes club seating and event spaces.
