North Central Junior High

North Liberty, IA

The south façade of this new junior high school utilizes banded brick comprised of B-grade bricks from various Iowa brickyards. As a result of this approach, no energy was expended in the brick production portion of the project. Earth-friendly concepts were used throughout the school’s design and construction. The various bricks are symbolic of the region’s bedrock layers and enable this distinctive design feature to also serve as a teaching tool. Masonry was selected as a key element of this project for its durability, affordability, local availability and design features. Brick was used throughout the building’s exterior and extends into the interior at the entrance and two-story grand staircase.
