Private Colorado Residence
Snowmass Village, CO
The design of this home in Snowmass Village, Colo. was influenced by an aggressively sloping site that presented spectacular views across the valley to a range of snow-capped mountains beyond. The color of the local stone both inside and outside the house complements the aspen trees during their autumnal color change, while all of the major interior spaces follow the steep roof angle in order to achieve a presence worthy of the dynamic site. The home’s many terraces and cantilevered decks were deliberately designed to maximize the relationship of the views with the human scale dictated by the architecture. The multi-pavilioned plan also helps reduce the mass of the house and allows it to blend visually into the mountain. The architect likes to build with masonry because “the use of stone [represents] strength and permanence. In good stone walls—true stone walls—you can sense the horizontal joint because the stone is laid upon the stone,” he says.
