Rolling Hills Community Church

A palette of natural materials was chosen for this large church expansion to foster a sense of warmth, substance and connection to nature both inside and out. The architect selected rich, natural materials to blend with the brick exterior of the existing church building. Earth-toned red and ochre brick are the primary exterior materials while warm, ground-face concrete masonry is located at the base. The dominant red blend coordinates closely with the brick of the existing building, while the ochre was introduced as an accent in the typical wall composition and used to identify the main building entries. More subtle patterns and accent details were incorporated using a darker brown brick and rug texture brick within the red brick wall surfaces to help further develop a sense of comfort. Earth-toned concrete unit pavers in flowing curvilinear patterns in the main entry areas accentuate the warm, natural theme and feature curved lines juxtaposed against straight rectangular geometries. The design team carried the theme through to the interior to produce an integrated architectural expression. The exterior brick was brought to the inside at the entry areas and split-faced concrete masonry—recommended by the acoustical engineer for its sound diffusing properties—created the side walls of the main worship center. Natural sandstone tile was chosen as a floor accent material and wall base; ceramic and porcelain tile is featured in the bathrooms. These materials coordinate with the rich, natural palette of cherry and ample wood panelling, trim and doors that complement the earth-tone carpets and counter top materials.
