Stone Fireplace
St. Louis, MO
This massive 14 ft. high x 10 ft. wide stone fireplace was designed by architect William D. Cover to resemble the dominating fireplaces found in the great rooms of Old World English hunting lodges. Truly a story of scale, the fireplace took Spencer Brickwork six days to construct. Setting the stones, which weigh up to 1300 pounds, required ingenuity and—in the case of those exceeding 100 pounds—special equipment to wrestle them into place at a height of eight feet. The firebox is roughly 6 ft. high x 6 ft wide x 38 inches deep and contains more than 700 firebrick set in a herringbone pattern.
